Renter Requirements

What is the age requirement to rent a car with Countrywide?

  • To avoid a youthful driver fee, the primary renter and any additional drivers of the vehicle must be at least 25 years of age.
  • Minimum age to rent a vehicle is 18 years of age in NY State.
    • A $55.00/day additional charge applies to renters/drivers 18-20 years old.
    • A $35.00/day additional charge applies to renters/drivers 21-24 years old.
  • Certain specialty and larger sized vehicles may not be rented to drivers under the age of 25.

What do I need to rent a car from Countrywide?

Eligible renters must have the following:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Major credit card in your name
    • We accept Visa, MasterCard, & American Express
    • Please note that a major credit card and a debit card with the Visa or MasterCard logo are not the same. Credit cards have a pre-determined spending limit.
  • Current United States automobile insurance policy in your name that covers vehicles for hire.  Many major credit cards include rental car insurance coverage.  Check with your insurance company and/or credit card provider prior to your rental.

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)

  • Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is not insurance.CDW is an option that relieves the renter of financial responsibility if the car is damaged or stolen while under rental contract. If you chose to decline CDW and the rental vehicle is damaged or stolen, your credit card will be immediately charged for your insurance deductible. Additionally, you may be responsible for loss-of-use charges while the vehicle is out of service for repair.
  • Please Note: CDW is limited to collision damage only. CDW does not cover damage normally covered by Comprehensive Insurance (glass damage, etc.)
  • Optional Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)does not apply for Canadian travel.

Airport Rentals

Countrywide Rent-A-Car partners with Cape Air to provide our customers the convenience of airport based car rentals.  (subject to airport service charge)

Airport Rental Process

  • Reservations:
    • All paid reservations must be processed through our Potsdam office or through the online reservation portal.
  • Check Out:
    • Renters picking up at an airport should report to the Cape Air counter to pick up your contract and keys.
  • Your Vehicle:
    • Renter is responsible for confirming starting mileage and gas level match your contract.  Please report errors to the Potsdam office before departing.
  • Check In:
    • Your rental unit must be returned to the same location unless advance arrangements have been made.
    • Upon arrival at the airport, please park the vehicle in the parking lot and turn the keys in to the Cape Air counter attendant.
  • Payment & Receipt: Upon returning your keys to the Cape Air attendant, the vehicle will be checked in.  Once checked in, your credit card will be charged all applicable charges and you will be emailed a receipt.

How do I book a rental?

Online: Make a reservation using our easy 4-step online booking system by selecting the reservations link above. You will receive an email confirmation upon completing your reservation.

By Phone: Alternately you may call us at (315) 265-1850 during normal business hours for quick assistance or to make your reservation/booking by phone.

Do I need to pre-pay for my booking?

All reservations require a credit card authorization/hold equaling the estimated cost of the rental at the time of booking.

At the time of check-out you must provide a credit card deposit of $100 plus the estimated cost of the rental.

Can I rent a car without a major credit card?

We must have a credit card deposit to hold your reservation and a deposit of the estimated charges plus $100 at the time of check-out. 

In addition we must have a credit card on file to cover the insurance excess amounts, fuel, extended rental period, traffic fines, and mileage overage. To do so, a valid credit card in the name of the renter, must be provided upon vehicle check out.

Using Debit Cards

Although you may use a debit card, pre-paid card, or another form of payment to pay for the final charges on the vehicle, if you reserve a vehicle through this website, you will need to provide a major credit card at the time of the rental to secure the rental transaction. A major credit card is a card that is supported by a pre-determined line of credit, and not a bank account, or a pre-paid balance.

What if I don't have automobile insurance in my name?

All renters must provide proof of current automobile insurance in their name. If you do not have automobile insurance in your name, you may purchase Countrywide's uninsured motorist coverage for up to $100 per day. Please note that Countrywide's uninsured motorist coverage is limited to use only in New York State.

Are any additional services or equipment available?

EQUIPMENT: Advance notice is required for rental of child seats, GPS, or other equipment.

ADDITIONAL DRIVERS: You may add additional drivers to your contract at the time of check out. Additional drivers MUST be meet renter requirements of age and licensing. A fee of $10 per day per additional driver will apply.

VEHICLE DELIVERY: Countrywide offers vehicle delivery services for an additional fee.  Please call for more information.

INSURANCE: Countrywide Rent-A-Car DOES NOT sell rental insurance. Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is available for purchase.

UNINSURED MOTORISTS may rent a car for an additional charge of $100 per day (plus standard rental charges and taxes).  Uninsured motorists are restricted to travel in New York State.

Can I change my reservation once it is booked?

Changes may be made to your reservation during normal business hours.  To make changes, please call us at 315-265-1850 with your reservation number and details of all necessary changes.

Can I cancel my reservation?

Yes, you may cancel a reservation at any time.  However, cancellations within 24 hours of your scheduled pick-up time will be subject to a $50 cancellation fee (plus applicable taxes). Please call us at (315)265-1850 in the event that you need to cancel your rental reservation.

Can I travel to Canada?

Yes. Our vehicles are covered for use in both Canada and USA. Please note that if you are a Canadian resident, Canadian customs officials may deny you entry into Canada with a US registered rental car.

Uninsured motorists may NOT travel to Canada.

Optional Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) does not apply for Canadian travel.

Can I pick up my car out of office hours?

No, we do not offer vehicle pick up outside of our normal business hours **link to hours**.

Pick up and drop offs are available at the Ogdensburg and Massena airports anytime between the first and last flights of the day.

Can I return the vehicle out of normal business hours?

Yes, you may, however you must notify us by phone during normal business hours prior to the return date to make arrangements. Returns out of normal business hours may be charged an additional fee.

May I return earlier/later than the date/time in the rental agreement?

You may return at a different date/time but you must inform us in advance if you will be keeping your car longer than originally planned.

Drivers License Requirements - US and Canada

License must be issued from the State/Province of Residence.

License may not be expired.

No Learners Permits or photocopies of any kind.

A temporary DL will not be accepted.

License must be inspected at the time of rental.

Please Note:

As stated above, expired Driver's Licenses are not accepted. The only exception to this practice is a renter that is Active Military, with an Active Military ID and a Driver's License issued from a state with a Military Extension Policy.

Residents of the Province of Ontario, Canada must hold a G2 License.

International Renters:

License must be issued from the Country of Residence.

All drivers must have a valid non-expired driving license and photographic identification to be produced at the time of rental.

Two part license holders must produce both parts.

International Drivers Permit required if the license is not in English

If the driver's license is in a language other than English, but the characters are in English (i.e.alphabet is an extended Latin-based alphabet like German, Spanish, etc.), an International Driver's Permit is recommended but not required.

Note: An International Driver's Permit is a translation of the individual's home country driver's license and is not an indication of the status, restrictions or type of license the individual holds.

If the driver's license is in a language other than English and the characters are not in the English language (i.e. Russian, Chinese, etc.) an International Driver's Permit is required.

Note: Customers are not allowed to rent a vehicle with only an International Driver's Permit in a foreign language.
